Both: I believe that clove oil has both anesthetic and antiseptic properties. It is a remedy and not a treatment. You may just be delaying a bigger problem.

Alternatives: Go see a dentist. Clove oil is not a good solution. Tylenol (acetaminophen) or any anti-inflammatory medication can help with dental pain. Aleve, motrin, advil and even a holistic alternative arnica can help too. But the key is to find the source of the pain and stop it. It sounds like you are suffering. Please get a dentist to help you!
