Nevus/nevi = moles: Medically speaking, moles (spots) are called nevus (singular) or nevi (plural). As long as they're small & don't change, they're fine. There's no good explanation aside from genetics & luck. But you also need to know your abcdes of skin cancer (https://patienteducation.Osumc.Edu/documents/melano.Pdf). Skin lesions: Dark spots on the skin can be completely benign moles, or can be precancerous growths, or skin cancer. The best way to know is to visit your primary care physician, who can look at them and decide if a dermatology eval is indicated. If any of them look concerning, a dermatologist can do further analysis. Concern if any of them are new, growing fast, irregular borders, black.
