Harmless nevi: It sounds like he has nevi or birth marks. These are usually benign like freckles. However, if he has six or more nevi on his body he should be evaluated by his pediatrician or dermatologist.

Large brown spots: These large brown spots, which are not raised, seem more like skin pigmentation called cafe-au-lait spots. Have your pediatrician inspect the spots, measure them and count how many your 2-year-old has. A count of 5 or more may indicate a condition called neurofibromatosis.
