Control, not cure : Gerd is when acid content of the stomach is allowed into the food pipe (esophagus). It is a defect in the function of the sphincter which should prevent this. In some people it is caused by a hiatus hernia. None of these problems can be fixed with a medication. If it is severe, surgery may be an option. Otherwise the symptoms are controlled with antacids, medications to decrease acid production.
