What would cause the white part on half the eyeball to be extremely red?

Many reasons: Could be subconjunctival hemorrhage, scleritis, episcleritis, dryness, blepharitis. You should see an eye md who can evaluate you. If it is bright red blood that you are seeing, it is likely a subconjunctival hemorrhage, which will resolve on its own in a week or so.

If painless: Its just a broken blood vessel. If painful, could be a long list that requires attention.
