What can cause redness on the sclera of the eye?

The list is long: Redness of the sclera or the covering conjunctiva is due to dilated blood vessels on either surface. The possible reasons for this phenomenon are dry eye, infection of the eye, inflammation inside of the eye, irritation to the surface of the eye, blood, chronic dilation of the blood vessels from poor sleep or chronic use of visine. You will need to see your eye doctor to determine the cause.
