Lack of sleep/eyes: The redness of your eyes when you haven't slept is usually due to excessive dryness. While you sleep, your eyes are constantly bathed by your tears and refreshes them. When not sleeping and keeping them closed, that "refresh" does not occur and they can become irritated and then red. If you have to stay awake, try artificial tears and avoid rubbing the eyes. Also avoid irritants such as smoke.
