Allergy, infection: The tissues around the eyes are very sensitive to allergy and and low grade infections of the eye and lids. Sinus infections or inflammation can also cause swelling under the eye. The lids are also subject to swelling from generalized edema in the body, which may build up overnight. Allergy generally causes itching, while infection causes tenderness and possible discharge. Also could be a sty.
