Big Toe Pain: There are so many causes. You first check if the pain is coming from the big toe joint or the lesser joint by the toenail by moving these joints. Then, you check whether there is an ingrown toenail by pushing down the sides of the nail. If there is no swelling in the toe, yet it is causing intense pain, have a neurologist check you for an L5 nerve root irritation from your back. Dr rich blake.

Stabbing pain: Typically this is caused by a nerve sensation. It is difficult to tell without a better description of the pain. You may be pinching a nerve or have irritated a nerve on the side of the great toe. Make sure your shoes are supportive and comfortable.
