No hurry: You have chronic gum disease. Didn't happen over night. Won't go away over night.

Why not?: Change your priorities or find a dentist who can see you sooner. You've already let things go too long. Why was that? This is your body and your health at stake.

Infection: Sounds like you definitely have periodontitis. What youj are probably seeing is infected tissue, since the underlying bone has most likely receded. Probably have foul breath also, which won't help you make friends. See a dentist of periodontist right away. This can affect your health and some studies have suggested it can be a cause of heart disease.

Why are you waiting?: Find a different dentist who can see you sooner or if putting this off is your choice than change your priorities. At 16 you are way to young to develop periodontal disease. The sooner you start to treat it the sooner you will get it under control. In the mean time gently brush after each meal with a soft tooth brush. Use Prohealth mouth wash. Floss nightly.
