Basic anatomy: They are located deep behind the intestines (retroperitoneal). From the back, they are blanketed by multiple layers of muscle. See http://education.Yahoo.Com/reference/gray/subjects/subject/253 which gives another view and more information. Note that "kidney pain" does not always correlate with the actual location of kidneys, as in other visceral organs.
