Best posed: This question is best posed to your doctor who knows your history better. Xanax (alprazolam) does not treat bipolar and is very addicting so not good. What medications are chosen for you is done after careful consideration of your symptoms, what kind or how sever your bipolar is, if you have depression and how bad, what other medical problems you have, what other meds you are on and other factors.

Unlikely: You are on Adderall (dextroamphetamine and racemic amphetamine) that can trigger a manic episode in someone with bipolar disorder. Lithium alone works rarely, but when it does, it works well. The only bipolar med that has been shown in studies to block mania in bpd is depakote. Remember, the average number of medication with bipolar disorder is 3.5 meds. Maybe you need psychotherapy to come up with a way to remember to take your meds. Discuss all of the above with your psychiatrist.
