Talk with your doc: Xanax (alprazolam) can certainly cause sedation, and your doctor needs to know this is happening at the dose s/he prescribed. Your dose could be decreased, which might provide the desired result. Its relatives can also cause sedation. Sometimes ssri antidepressants are also prescribed for anxiety, and at the appropriate dose they can work. Psychotherapy is also an important part of treatment, though.
