Unusual place: For a swollen vein. I would suggest have a professional see it too. Any trauma to the area, tendinitis? Are you sure it is a vein?

Wrist veins.: Wrist veins cand swell for many reasons including levels of hydration, exertion, hormones and outsided temperature. Usually wrist veins are not of concern. However, one of the most common causes of wrist swelling is not a vein but a ganglion and, is this is what you have, you may need to see a hand surgeon.
