A 47-year-old member asked:

how many hours does it take to rehydrate after dehydration?

Degree dehydration: It really depends on how dehydrated you were in the first place before starting rehydration. If dehydration is moderate to severe, you will likely receive a 1-2 liter bolus of IV fluids, with the IV line wide open, allowing the fluid to get into you as quickly as possible. It can take anywhere from 30-60 minutes to get 1 liter of fluid into you in this manner.

In how many days will my milk supply come in?

Dr. Michael Pappas

1-10 days: Your pre milk or colostrum is probably already in, but your full milk supply can take a few days or more especially for the first time mom. A baby's cry, suckling, and holding your baby are all stimulants to your milk "letdown". Other factors which may help with your milk release is good hydration, good eating habits, drugs and sleep. Supplementation with formula can help in the meantime.

Why is it necessary to get so many ultrasounds in pregnancy/

2 doctor answers7 doctors weighed in
Dr. Craig Keathley
Obstetrics and Gynecology 24 years experience
It isn't: In an uncomplicated pregnancy, repeated ultrasounds aren't necessary. A 1st trimester sonogram is best for confirming the due date and number of fetuses while fetal anatomy is best assessed in the mid to late 2nd trimester. Additional sonograms may be recommended if complications such as hypertension, diabetes, or pre-eclampsia arise, but for the uncomplicated, low risk patient, 2 should suffice.

A 33-year-old female asked:

I read over exertion can lead to slight elevation of platelet due to dehydration. How come fasting for 12 hours doesn't affect platelet count result ?

Dr. Gerry Tolbert

Depends : Traditionally, fasting for bloodwork does not require you to not drink water. In fact, you're encouraged to drink water in order to maintain normal hydration while you are restricting other electrolytes and sugar which could cause aberrant values. Technically the dehydration cause by refraining from liquids may potentially be sufficient to falsely elevate both the hematocrit and the platelet count.
