He should also give you a script for pain medication appropriate to the procedure, and appropriate to his knowledge of your pain threshold and ability to handle pain. Call, get advice.

Root canal pain: A root canal on a tooth in and of itself should not be the cause of pain. However, with that said it is common for some soreness after root canal therapy for a couple of days. This can be because the ligaments are sore from the treatment. Otherwise, you could have a lingering infection from the original infection or some other cause. Ask your dentist if it is lasting.
