Few days....: There generally is pain after the local anesthetic wears off; the dentist should explain and warn about that depending how invasive the procedure is, whether he had to clear out infection, or abscess at the root. He should also give you a script for pain medication appropriate to the procedure, and appropriate to his knowledge of your pain threshold and ability to handle pain. Call, get advice.

Pain post root canal: This may last a few hours or a few days but one should notice a steady decrease if its worsening contact the dentist.

Root canal pain: A root canal on a tooth in and of itself should not be the cause of pain. However, with that said it is common for some soreness after root canal therapy for a couple of days. This can be because the ligaments are sore from the treatment. Otherwise, you could have a lingering infection from the original infection or some other cause. Ask your dentist if it is lasting.
