Toe tendon: The toe would not move up or down. If the toe is swollen the toe may not move and may take sometime to determine if the tendon is torn. Your podiatrist should be able to determine the extent of any injury.

Big Toe: Will have pain and depending on tendon or tendons involved you many not be able to move it. Mri should be taken and at very least immobilization of joint. See podiatrist or ortho in area.

Pain, swelling: If you tore a big toe tendon you would likely have pain and swelling and possible redness. Also, you could not move the toe very well, depending on how bad the tear is. If you suspect a tendon tear, see a podiatrist.

MRI: There is pain and loss of function, instability with the big toe range of motion. The great toe has pain with range of motion at the tendon tear and there is usually swelling at the tear site. However, everything else must be ruled out clinically. Getting an MRI is a quicker way to visualize a tear. Good luck.
