May be infected: Yes you can see the tonsils without special equipment if you are able to control your tongue and get it out of the way. The tonsils swell in response to infections. If one side is swollen there may be an infection on that side of the face, a tooth or gum infection, or the tonsil itself could be infected. It may also be that the swelling is not a tonsil but a gland. Have a professional check it out.

See a doctor: Swelling on the side of the tongue could be a multitude of things. Tonsils are in the throat, so most likely it is not that. You should have it evaluated by an ear nose & throat doctor if it continues.

See ENT: Although lingual tonsils can enlarge and be felt as a mass at the base of tongue, other conditions need to be ruled out. The anterior tongue can be seen without special equipment, but the base of tongue is sometimes better visualized with fiberoptic nasopharyngoscopy. This is performed by an ent.
