Do facial chemical peels increase or decrease skin cancer risks?

May decrease: Deep chemical peels are generally used to treat moderately to severely sun-damaged skin that exhibits lines and pigment changes. Medically, they are also used to treat superficial cancerous lesions and pre-cancerous lesions and have been shown to decrease the appearance of these cancers. However, your overall risk is still related to sun exposure, genetics and other medical risk factors.

Not sure.: Use of sunscreen, and limiting sun exposure are two known ways to reduce skin cancer risk. If these are used to block sun exposure, then they likely decrease risk, but the chemicals themselves might increase it. More research is needed.

May decrease: Precancer skin lesions may be removed with a chemical peel so may decease your risk.
