Should you take claritin and mucinex (guaifenesin) d together?

Ok together: Claritin is an antihistamine and Mucinex (guaifenesin) d contains a decongestant (d) and a mucolytic. These should be fine together, as long at the Claritin is plain and not Claritin d12 or Claritin d24.

Claritin d and Mucinex (guaifenesin) can you take them together?

Yes: Claritin d combines an antihistamine (loratadine) with a decongestant (pseudo-ephedrine). Mucinex (guaifenesin) is an expectorant. These are safe to take together. Would make sure that Mucinex product is plain Mucinex and not mucinex-d (which also contains pseudo-ephedrine) before taking these together.

Mixing URI meds: Yes. Mucinex (guaifenesin) d is an expectorant/decongestant combination and Clarinex is an antihistamine. The combination can be helpful for a short term problem. For a chronic upper respiratory problem a topical nasal steroid spray is likely to be of more benefit.

A member asked:

Can I take Mucinex (guaifenesin) dm and Claritin d?

Yes: These medications can be taken together because each has a different mode of action. Mucinex (guaifenesin) is prescribed to loosen the mucus. Claritin-d is an antihistamine and a decongestant. So the two of the drugs together should 1.) loosen the secretions, 2.) Claritin should decrease any allergic reaction and the decongestant should decrease mucus production.

Yes: Whether it does anything or not, is another issue. Be sure not to take both Mucinex (guaifenesin) d and Claritin d.

NO!: Both medications have "d" - Pseudoephedrine 120mg. This is a potent constrictor of blood vessels and the dose of 240mg (of both medications) needs to be spread over 24 hours. Even 120mg cause quite a bit of side effects. You can use i tablet with d and the other without.
