Herpes in the eye: The eyelids and the eye itself can be infected with cold sores (herpes simplex). If you have a cold sore on the eyelid, it is important to make sure the eye is not infected as well. If the eye is infected with herpes, the vision may be severely affected. Potentially: Herpes virus (the cold sore virus) can also infect the conjunctiva, cornea, and in certain cases, even the retina and rest of the eye. If you have cold sore lesions on the eyelids, it is important to have and ophthalmologist look at the cornea to make sure it is not infected as well.
