Epidermal cysts.: Your doctor is probably right, they are probably epidermal cysts. The chest one may be leaking, which often causes redness and soreness. Some can even become infected. A dermatologist can remove them for him quickly and easily in the office.

Cyst: Sound like he has a sebaceous or epidermal inclusion cyst. Both are the same. But this one sound like it has become infected. See your physician to evaluate it.
