Somatoform pain: You likely have what is called a som a toform pain disorder this pain is very real. Attempts to treat such pain have often included narcotics which of course are very addictive and require increasing doses, antidepressants, and virtually every type of cognitive therapy treatment you can imagine. You obviously do not abuse your xanax (alprazolam). You have very real pain. As long as the pain persists i would recommend that you stay on xanax (alprazolam). You have a treatment for a condition that often defies treatment. I would therefore feel lucky and remain on what you're taking. Psychotherapy may be helpful. There is a higher incidence of sexual and emotional abuse among people with somatoform pain disorder, but not everyone with somatoform pain disorder has a history of abuse. Best wishes to you. I am glad that you have found effective treatment.
