Humidity: A humidifier will help, as will using saline drops right in the nose to loosen the mucous. If someone is taking a shower, someone else sitting in bathroom in the steam from the shower is also helpful. Put the humidifier right next to the baby's crib. Putting it across the room doesn't do much good.

Feeds ok?: Sometimes babies sound stuffy, but if they are able to feed ok then they are showing you their breathing is fine. Overuse of nasal aspirators can sometimes irritate. Cool mist humidifier can sometimes help. If worsens see your doctor.

Probably not...: Humidifiers don't tend to help much with congestion, unfortunately. Depending upon whether this is related to a cold or allergies, you may want to try some different remedies. If it has been going on for a while, have him see his pediatrician to discuss the possibility of allergies. If it has been less than a week, it may be a cold and using salt water sprays or irrigations may be of benefit.

?irritants?: The first months are troubled by narrow nasal passages & exposure to dust, fragrences, smoke & other irritants.Baby tries to flush these out of the nose with mucous but this often ends as congestion & produces rattling with breathing. The best rx is washing out the nose with saline & suctioning the remainder. Eliminate irritants from baby's environment & this will happen less.Humidifiers rarely help
