Depends on site: Survival will depend on location of metastasis, concomitant medical conditions, age, and nutritional status. Almost all patients with stage IV renal cell cancer are incurable. However, carefully selected patients may benefit from surgical resection of localized metastatic disease. Only 8-10% of patients with stage 4 kidney cancer are alive at 5 years.
