Elavil (amitriptyline) effects: Amitriptyline is the generic form of elavil (amitriptyline). It is a tricyclic antidepressant medication that has anticholinergic activity. I am not sure what effect you are having but urinary retention can occur. Discuss in detail with your prescribing health professional any difficulties you are experiencing.
