No: An inhaler for a 1 year old would need a spacer and mask for it to work effectively, and you need a good seel. This will not work when he/she is sleeping. Talk to your doctor about a nebulizer. An inhaler when used correctly will be more effective but it is not unreasonable to use a nebulizer by a blow by technique in certain circumstances.

See below: If the child is in no distress and just coughing occasionally, i would wait on an mdi (metered dose inhaler) as the mechanics of proper use is impossible if the child is asleep. If you mean a nebulizer treatment, that can be done as long as you get the med in the child's face so they can breath it.

Aerochamber Needs: Yes, you can give an inhaler when your son is sleeping as well as you use an aerochamber with a face mask. Just place the face mask over his mouth and nose and monitor the number of breaths with each puff of the inhaler.
