What would cause an inguinal/mesh hernia repair to fail? what are the symptoms of failure?

Hernia failure: Hernia recurrence is 1-5% after surgery. Poor tissue, obesity, steroid medications, infections and possibly return to heavy work too soon can be some possible reasons. Many causes are unknown. Symptoms would be the same swelling, bulge & discomfort at the hernia site. Would need a physical examination with your surgeon.

Timing is Important: There are two failures that are generally noted. Early failures (within the first month) are traditionally considered technical errors of fixing the mesh to the tissue well. Late failures can occur due to patient tissue characteristics. Weak tissue will worsen over time and allow for widening of the hernia defect, thus leading to new hernia formation. Ongoing pain and swelling are symptoms.
