Toe pain: Do you have anything else other than the pain? It is not clear from your post as to why silver nitrate was used. It's not used for pain. You do need an exam of your toe because without it, it's essentially impossible to arrive to a correct diagnosis.

Put some ice on it: Silver nitrate can sting a little but the effect usually isn't that long. The question is what were they cauterizing. Sometimes, silver nitrate is used to stop a nick or a cut. Either way, apply ice, you can cover the region with a band aid after your done icing and try and get some rest.
