Find the cause: It sounds as if you may have neuropathy, a disease that compromises nerve function. While diabetes is the most common cause in the us, there are many other possible causes that should be investigated. A more sensitive study (a glucose tolerance test) can also diagnose early diabetes in people who otherwise appear normal. A neurologist can help with the search for causes and help manage symptoms.

Nerve or vascular: You may be having a peripheral nerve issue. A lesion on a nerve root or compression if a nerve can cause this. Does your toes and fingers get red or pale also?
