Possibly so: Hepatic encephalopathy can present with delirium -- it can include hallucinations, delusions, difficulty with attention & focus, disturbed thinking, and altered consciousness. The person can be either sleepy or agitated, w/poor self-care. Admission could be to a medical-psychiatric unit at a tertiary medical center. Commitment laws vary by state. Ask his doctor about the specific process locally.

Hepatiencephalopathy: Hepatic encephalopathy has 4 stages. Stage 1 has some deterioration of cognitive function, mild confusion, but should be able to function. Stage 2 has moderate confusion. Stage 3. Has severe confusion, hard to rouse. Stage 4 has comatose. This is a medical problem if given knowledge of liver disease. You have every right to admit these patients for proper treatment.
