Alcoholism: Try consult with alanon. This does not sound like hepatic encephalopathy or even korsakoff encephalopathy due to thiamine deficiency and usually presenting with ocular disturbances, changes in mental state, and unsteady stance and gait. He might benefit from psychological counseling, but obviously has not taken that option for years of self-abuse. Good luck and best wishes.

Safety 1st: You don't say if you're in danger or if children might be at risk in any way. So, i apologize if i'm over-reacting but... Even if his temper and mood driven behaviors are caused by a medical condition you still need to think of safety. From a safe place, you can try to get help for him too. Find a shelter (soc serv/relig/ relative/friend) to protect you and work from there.

Different issues: Some people are "mean drunks, " and this can be both dangerous and frightening to family members. If he's angry and mean, you need to get out of the house.
