A member asked:

Can type 1 diabetes be traced to a specific genome?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not Exactly: Type 1 diabetes does have some genetic connection, but not as much as type 2. Research has shown that the iddm 1 gene on chromosome 6 has some correlation, but is not conclusive. Dm 1 is generally see as being caused by exposure to a virus that destroys the beta cells of the pancreas. New research may show more genetic correlation, but there isn't as strong genetic connection as type 2 diabetes.
