It depends...: A hard lump is probably a torus, a benign growth of bone that has probably always been there. If it is soft to touch, tender or movable, it may be a localized infection or a lesion. See you9r dentist for a diagnosis.

This can vary...: At the midline of the palate it may be a normal location for extra bone called a torus. If closer to the teeth it may be an abscess. Other things may cause the same. The best way to know for sure is to have a reputable dentist evaluate it. It would be very unfortunate if it was something serious and not treated. Please see a dentist.

Bony protrusion: also called palatal tori that is a completely benign bone growth, which is very common. If concerned, see your dentist for evaluation. .

TORI: Normally an outgrowth of the bone of the palate (also appear on the inside of the mandible on tongue side,) and other locations on mandible and maxillae. Not everyone gets these protrusions. Usually not an issue unless getting dentures. If in doubt, I would have the area checked for preventative purposes.
