It is highly contagious through skin contact and is usually caused by staph aureus and occasionally streptococcus. It is treated with antibiotics - usually oral and topical along with keeping lesions clean with soap and water.

The best antibiotic for school sores is flucloxacillin a form of penicillin. The sores also need to be covered to stop them spreading. Cleansing the skin with antiseptic and putting antibiotic cream in the nose may also be needed
