A member asked:

Shall you brush your teeth when you wake up if you are planning to have breakfast 5 minutes later, or shall you wait until you eat?

That's a personal: Preference. My personal philosophy is to brush prior to eating breakfast, and then a quick rinse following breakfast. The night time brushing prior to bed is mandatory. Hope this helps.

Best after eating!: Some people feel uncomfortable taste and/or breath when they wake up./assuming that you had a thorough brushing right before going to bed, you can wait 5 minutes and brush after eating. This will remove plaque and also will make you feel "clean" before your daily routine. Some research supports that it's ok to brush before eating as plaque won't organize. I don't like this method for my patients.

You can wait: If you cleaned your teeth well before bed you have a minimal amount of bacteria, so it is ok to wait until after breakfast to brush and floss.

Brushing: Some people feel that they have to brush their teeth upon wakening to have a fresh and clean breath and taste. What's most important is to brush and floss properly for approximately 2 minutes after every meal and rinse after snacks.
