Many possible causes: There are many possible causes for hemolysis (rupture of red blood cells). These many causes can range from not really being noticeable to the patient to being life-threatening. The most important thing is to determine the cause and closely follow red blood cell levels. Many causes are treatable, and some even go away on their own. Close followup is essential.
