Babies need iron: No, infants need a dietary iron source until they are about 1 year. They can't store iron and so are at high risk for anemia without an iron source. They must have breast milk or formula until age 1. Formula also has specific nutritional qualities to make it like breastmilk. Cow or goat milk, even with a liquid vitamin supplement, is not an accepted substitute for breast milk or formula.
