A member asked:

My 75 year old brother has cirrhosis of the liver, what now?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Cirrhosis is ESLD: Is esld=end-stage liver disease. By definition, much of his liver has now been replaced by dead scar tissue & will likely not repair itself. Just a few esld causes: viral infection (b, c, CMV are common), familial (hemochromatosis, wilson's, alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency, others), toxic/environmental/occupational, alcohol related. Has higher risk of liver cancer. May stay compensated if no alcohol.
