Depends: If you're not on Insulin once a day or even less is probably enough if you check different times during the day. Insulin is a different story--depending on you insulin(s) you may need to check 4 times.

Complicated: Your physician should send you to a diabetes center for education and follow-up. The frequency with which you test blood sugar will depend upon the type of therapy you are receiving and your response to the treatment. Some diabetics can develop a stable pattern and not need as frequent testing as those with less controlled (brittle) diabetics. Diet, exercise, life style may all play a role.
