Differences: All antidepressants are effective as a general rule, but it depends on the individual. Each target neurotransmitters, but the full effect comes over time and with changes in brain communication networks. Generally venlanaxine is more stimulating and Mirtazapine is more sedating. Both may be prescribed at different times of the day.

Both antidepressants: Both venlafaxine and Mirtazapine work well against depression. They both affect serotonergic and noradrenergic transmission, but do this a little differently -- thus having different side effect profiles. Mirtazepine has more sedation and appetite-stimulating effects than venlafaxine. This can be used to advantage in people who need these effects. Venlafaxine can sometimes raise bp.
