Could be allergic: This sounds like allergic conjunctivitis with mucus discharge. However, bacterial or viral infections can produce similar symptoms. See your eye doctor for an examination and treatment.

Allergies : Allergies cause red and dry eyes. Cold compress can relieve the swelling. Cetaphil or eucerin cream can help with dry skin around the eyes. Over-the-counter allergy medicine, such as loratidine (claritin) or cetrizine (zyrtec) should be taken to stop the overall allergy. Over the counter eyedrops help relieve eye itching: zaditor (ketotifen) is a good eye drop for this.
