Macrocytosis: Mcv= size of your red blood cells. If you're not anemic, it's not all that helpful. However, macrocytosis (large red blood cells) can be caused by a deficiency in folate (folic acid) and b12, alcoholism, or a lot of new young blood cells (which are bigger than their mature counterpart). Some drugs can cause this. Zoster virus (shingles) does not. Bottom line, your doctor is right. Nothing to worry about.

Pathology consult: Treat a person, not a lab value. The key is to find out why the MCV is up. One situation in which this can happen is if you have a protein in your blood that just happens to make red cells stick together so two are counted as one. The pathologist can determine if this is the case. If you drink a lot of alcohol or are hypothyroid, high mcv's common. Trust B12 & folate (folic acid) are normal.
