Norvasc (amlodipine) at 18: You are rather young to have essential hypertension (h) at your age. I would ask your doctor to consider you a case of secondary hypertension (s), i.e. When your h is caused by secondary factors. Some examples are a renal artery stenosis or conn's syndrome, among others. If you do have s, treatment of its cause may get you off blood pressure meds. If you do not have s, Norvasc (amlodipine) is a safe drug.

Don't worry: Reactions are rare. Worrying about it will make your blood pressure higher. If you have concern, you can ask to take the medicine at the doctor's office or at the hospital. You are being given the normal starting dosage. Very frail or elderly patients might be started at 2.5 mg. Be sure to tell your doctor about your anxiety.

Calm: Let your doctor lower your blood pressure if it is high. The "deadly reaction" will be to uncontrolled high blood pressure. There are many types of blood pressure medicine. You can always ask to have one changed to another until your pressure is controlled and you like the way you feel on the medicine. You want to relieve the pressure on your heart and kidneys for a longer and healthier life.
