A member asked:

After hysterectomy how bad can gas be?

Varies: At the time of a hysterectomy the intestines typically stop moving for some hours, but the gas inside the intestines keep accumulating. Gas pains occur as the gas distends the intestines and the intestines start trying to push gas through. Some women get hardly any pain from this, others find the gas is worse than incision pain. Lessen gas pain by walking, simethicone, less narcotics.

Varies: Some women have big issues with gas and bloating after gynecologic surgery. It is usually due to the anesthetics and pain medications rather than the particular surgery done. The degree of discomfort and the amount of time until resolution varies widely.
