OF What?: The usual rule of thumb is that if an imaging study is indicated then the risk of the study should be outweighed by the benefits. Would be helpful to know what kind of exam you are asking about and why you need it that often.

Dr. Susan Woods
Internal Medicine 35 years experience
Eventually: By the time you have abnormalities on tests such as lung x-rays, you have very serious disease. Smoking narrows blood vessels (everywhere), damages skin and lung tissue (leads to asthma, emphysema) and causes cancer. Even tobacco companies have to report ingredients - 50 of which are known carcinogens! xrays are not a good test for damage. Quit help call 800-quit-now.

Sometimes: Calcifications are readily seen on chest radiograph particularly if several millimeters in diameter. Major bronchi can be seen. Smaller bronchi become evident when walls thicken secondary to coughing, viral infection, or smoking.Vascular markngs are normally seen because veins and arteries contain blood. Vascular markings can increase in infection, heart failure, and with congenital heart disease

X-ray: Simply, the black areas on an x-ray are where relatively higher numbers of x-rays were able to pass through the patient and hit the film and cause it to turn black. The white areas are where something was in front of the x-ray film that stopped the x-rays from reaching the film, like bone or metal.
