"Young" cells: White blood cells help the body fight infections. Left shift is a term used to indicate that some of the white blood cells are not fully mature, often because the body is trying to produce them at a faster rate than usual. So infection can be one cause of "left shift" although there are other causes. It is important to check with your doctor regarding the cause.
