How long can a patient survive on a ventilator?

1 doctor answer
Dr. Mark Avdalovic
24 years experience in Pulmonary Critical Care
Depends: Some patients with chronic neurologic conditions such as ALS (lou gehrigs dz.) can survive for years. If a patient goes on the ventilator for an acute reason like pneumonia, then the longer the patient is on the ventilator the more complications there are.
