A member asked:

Before suctioning an intubated patient hooked to mechanical ventilator, is it right to increase the fio2 to 100% to hyperoxygenate the patient?

It is reasonable.: This is typically done to prevent oxygen desaturation during suctioning.

Usually: That is usually the norm because, you are technically suctioning out air (and thus oxygen) from the lung when you suction. In all reality, does it affect oxygenation that much? Probably not. But, turning up the oxygen to 100% for a few seconds usually causes no harm.
