Good but depends: On the underlying cause of respiratory failure. Some conditions are reversible over a period of days & weeks, others are terminal. Suggest a discussion with the ICU specialist to help make any decisions.

Depends: The chances of recovery really depend on why the patient was placed on the ventilator in the first place. If the patient has severe lung disease and required the vent, chances may be poor. There are some instances however when patients can come off the ventilator fairly easily.
